Barrie’s waterfront is more than a scenic edge. The city sits on the western shore of Kempenfelt Bay, an arm of Lake Simcoe. Understanding that relationship makes the local map easier to read: the bay connects Barrie’s shoreline to a much larger lake landscape.
A railway route becomes a trail
The North Shore Trail follows a former railway corridor along the north side of Kempenfelt Bay. Its route therefore carries two stories at once: the movement of trains in the past and the movement of people along the waterfront today.
The City’s North Shore Trail access-improvement information identifies Kempenfelt Park, St. Vincent Park and Nelson Square as access locations. These names offer useful reference points when comparing a map with the shoreline itself.
Plan with current information
A history-and-geography walk can begin simply: locate the bay, follow the line of the former corridor on a map and notice where neighbourhood streets connect with the waterfront.
Construction, access and seasonal conditions can change. This article does not confirm that a particular project phase is complete. Check the City of Barrie’s North Shore Trail project page before planning a visit.
